Why Did God Leave Us Responsible for His Plan?

responsibility1One of the really interesting ideas of Scripture is when Jesus goes back to heaven and has left 12 men responsible for carrying on a plan that was conceived from many, many years ago. Jesus has accomplished his work, but how are human beings going to do taking the message of his resurrection and teachings to the rest of the world?

Almost 2,000 years later, we would have to conclude that God knew what he was doing. The message has survived, and it is continuing to be shared among people of every nation. Has it gone as God wanted? We know “the Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Pet. 3:9). If God wants all people to repent, has His leaving us responsible for the proclamation of His plan worked?

When considering this question, we need to look at a few key things. What happens if you give somebody great wealth without any responsibility? They tend to become spoiled and not take care of what they have been given. God made us responsible to help us understand how to treasure what He has given us. He is sharing the responsibility of getting souls to heaven with those who have been given the gift of heaven. Paul says it this way, “We are ambassadors for Christ, God making His appeal through us” (2 Cor. 5:20). God knew the best way for mankind to accept this great message is from someone who lives in the culture and understands the temptations of the world. Therefore, he sent Jesus to us, but he was not giving up his eternal home to remain on the earth for eternity. Instead, he wanted natives of the earth to remain to show how the plan can work; he made us his ambassadors to the world. We can help others see how the plan really works as it works in our lives.

This brings us to the second reason for God using us to accomplish His plan. It makes it clear that the plan works because of His mighty power. Paul explains this, “But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus 'sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh” (2 Cor. 4:7-11). God’s power and wisdom is made clear through our being perfected in Jesus Christ.

Since God planned from the beginning to have us be a vital part of His plan, what is our responsibility to Him? We need to be the ambassadors God called us to be. We need to be in the lives of those we are living among. We need to tell the message He has entrusted to us to the natives around us. We need to bring honor and glory to the kingdom we represent while we are still here on earth. The plan will only be successful in making sure that everyone has the chance or opportunity to respond to God’s grace if we do our part. It is not the fault of the plan if people don’t hear the gospel proclaimed; the responsibility remains ours, yours and mine!
