Evangelism--Closing the Deal

Posted by on in The Upward Call

No matter how many training courses you take, no matter how much you practice with another member of the church, evangelism always comes down to having to ask someone to study God’s Word with you. As far as I can tell, the lump you get in your throat never completely goes away and I believe this is good. I had a graduate professor that said this to me about teaching, “When you quit getting nervous the first day of classes, it is probably time to find a different career.” I agree with her sentiment because when you really care about...

Evangelism Part 3--Telling Your Story

In the last couple of weeks as I have talked about evangelism and sharing the gospel, I have reminded us how important it is to be consistent in our Christian example before others and how to begin talking about Jesus. This week I want to get to a part that I think is misunderstood by many—telling your story.             Many believe in order to evangelize someone, they must know the majority of the things in the Bible. I do believe a knowledge of God’s Word is important, but I don’t believe that is where we usually have to start the...

Evangelism: Step 2--Talking about Christ

Posted by on in The Upward Call

Last week I started our conversation about being evangelistic by reminding you how important your example is before others. I suggested you learn to be consistent, sincere, and transparent before others so they can see the real life of a Christian.   As we go to step two, I think of Charlie Brown and Lucy from the Peanuts cartoon. The well-known scene where Charlie Brown takes considerable time lining up his kick, only to have the ball grabbed away by Lucy at the last moment. Don’t spend all your time lining up your example and then completely miss their opportunity to...

Taking the First Step in Evangelism

Posted by on in The Upward Call

In my blog last week, I addressed the question of whether people are still interested in the gospel. I gave the answer of a resounding “Yes.” So if this is the case, then where do I begin taking the first step in reaching out to others with the gospel? Before we get to that answer, let me set the table for a few things that we need, as Christians, to be ready to reach out with our faith to others.               Last week I mentioned that people are searching, but before they begin searching they are watching. They are watching...

Are People Still Interested in the Gospel?

Posted by on in The Upward Call
Carol Coe 2
As someone who works with evangelism in the church, I can’t tell you the number of times I have heard people say that no one is interested in sitting down to learn God’s Word anymore. This perception may be true to some degree, but I think Satan is pulling the wool over our eyes to try to discourage us from talking about God’s plan of salvation to those who may actually be interested in listening.              In my experience over the past 12 years of trying to reach out to people, I have found that there are a great...

Accepting a Challenge

Posted by on in The Upward Call

Typically, in our culture, challenges are thought of in the arena of competition. A bosses’ authority is challenged at work, so he/she responds by making sure the employees know their place in the company. On the football field, a coach may challenge an official’s call or a defense may accept the challenge of keeping a team out of the end zone from the one yard line (sorry OU fans). Yet, a greater challenge then any of these awaits Christians, and it is not in the area of competition; it is in the area of answering God’s calling.             Rodney...

Getting Things Right as Parents

parenting
There is no bigger task in this world than being responsible for another human being. To some degree, we understand this responsibility in marriage as we merge our lives together with someone else. However, we are in a relationship with an adult and that means the responsibility often does not feel as great as it does with a child. When a baby looks at you with complete and utter dependence, it can be a daunting task to figure out how to I help this “little person” to the best life he/she can have?             Let me offer three things that are...

Learning to Love the Church

A lot of people will grow to love Jesus very easily, but not the same can be said for the church. Yet, it is essential that we come to love the body or bride of Christ just as much as we love him. There are many reasons some people have difficulty creating a strong relationship with the church and I want to talk about one of those and how to overcome it.   (1)   PROBLEM--Other people. Most of the people I talk with who have trouble creating a loving relationship with the church state that it is because of the people...

Taking Unnecessary Risks

Posted by on in The Upward Call
mt-everest-peak
Recently, I was watching a movie called Everest about some professional climbers who would take others who paid them up to the top of Mount Everest. Of the almost 4,000 people who have tried to climb Mt. Everest, only 660 have made it to the top and 142 have died trying. This particular movie that came out during 2015 detailed the story of a spring expedition in 1996 where 11 people died trying to climb the mountain. This mountain is over 29,000 feet high, with winds that often gusts to over 100 mph (sometimes up to 175 mph), with temperatures...

Personally Accountable

Posted by on in The Upward Call
Kanye West
I have found it humorous this week to watch the news surrounding entertainer Kanye West. He admitted that he is $53 million dollars in debt. For a man who has deemed himself the “greatest living artist and greatest artist of all time”, it seems he is not living up to the hype. However, it was his next move that I found humorous and sad at the same time. He tweeted the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, and asked him to “invest 1 billion dollars into Kanye West ideas.” Where is the personal accountability? It is not easy to get that...
