Consistency in Our Speech

Posted by on in The Upward Call
1300-we-are-what-we-repeatedly-do
People are listening, perhaps more than we care to know. They are listening to how we talk about others. They are listening to how we talk about the President of our country. They are listening to how we talk about other Christians. What is it they want to know? ARE WE CONSISTENT?   Do we talk nice about people until they wrong us? Do we talk about treating others as we want to be treated until our child’s basketball game and the referee makes a bad call? We must strive to be consistent in living the things that we teach and...

Beginning Relationships for the Right Reasons

Posted by on in The Upward Call
Building-Relationships
Satan has been good at getting us to have casual relationships with so many people without ever turning those relationships to God. We participate in conversations with friends, co-workers, and family members about everything from common interests such as sports teams, movies, our golf game, kid’s activities, the weather, and how bad the political scene is without ever bringing up the most important topic: Jesus.   What does this say about how important our religious life is to us? The things that are important to us get brought up regularly in conversations with others. This is why Jesus made it clear,...

Forgiveness

Posted by on in The Upward Call

“He that is without sin among you let him cast the first stone” (John 8:7).   Forgiveness is easy to talk about and hard to do. Yet, Jesus said very clearly, “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matt. 6:14-15). We do not like these verses when they apply to us; on the other hand, we are ready to quote them to someone else who is having difficulty with forgiveness.   Why is forgiveness so hard for us?...

How Closely Do We Have to Follow the Bible?

Posted by on in The Upward Call
authority
It is not by accident that Jesus talks a lot about obedience in the New Testament. Whether in John 14 where he continually says over and over, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (14:15, 21, 23), or whether it is a more detailed explanation of what obedience means in Matthew 7:21-23, Jesus wants obedience from his followers.   It is vital that we understand that obedience is not a random thing with God. He expects it and it is demanded. As parents, we understand that our children cannot be partially obedient when we give them something to do. If...

Abiding in the Word of God

Posted by on in The Upward Call
Bible 7
Jesus said in John 8:31-32, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”   Many people are being led astray from the truth because they are trusting the words of men without verifying what is being said with the Bible. It is an easy practice to fall into. We are so use to taking the words of others as truth without having to verify or check sources since the invention of the internet and access to massive amounts of data. The truth is, with so...

How to Live in but not of the World

Posted by on in The Upward Call

Romans 12: 1-2 says, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, which is good and acceptable and perfect.”   One of the most difficult challenges in Christianity is living in the world but striving not to be like the world. There have been various ways attempted to do this. Sometimes we...

Is It Possible to Have Only One Way to God?

To be blunt, Satan does not want us to think so. The longer he can keep people going different directions, the weaker he keeps God’s people. If millions of people were united in the teachings of the Bible and the will of God, it would be a much brighter world. Instead, we have dissenting voices, yet supposedly one God that we are all serving. It is a BIG LIE!   When we talk to others, we must frame Jesus’ claims in the light he framed them; he is either who he claimed to be---the Son of God—or a crazy liar. There...

What Color is Your Smoke Screen?

Smoke screen
We don’t often reveal ourselves completely to many people. Whether it is because we are afraid of getting hurt, used, or just don’t like who we are, we often keep a part of ourselves hidden to protect something in our lives.   However, Jesus doesn’t want us to have to hide anything from him. He doesn’t want us to fear him for any reason. We may say, “Yea, but you don’t know the sins I have committed.” Jesus does. In fact, he says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my...

Married or Simply Roommates

Posted by on in The Upward Call
Roommate Poster
Tell me what I am describing to you. Two people who live under the same roof; they share the bills so that they can get by. They share the cleaning duties of the home and the yardwork. They sleep in different rooms. They have different accounts. They each have their own television to watch their own shows separately. They spend less than 5 minutes a day talking to one another. This goes on day after day after day until they sometimes decide to split and get their own place.   Does this sound like a marriage or roommates to you? Unfortunately,...

You Will Be My Witnesses

Posted by on in The Upward Call
missions
Two weeks ago, a retired minister and professor asked me to find some old documents published by Oklahoma Christian University between 1972 and 1974. This minister, after his retirement, has been trying to find and record history of Korea Church of Christ. One of his major tasks is to find and record how Korea Christian University where I studied was founded. His purpose is to remember and give thank to those who helped and support as this university has been built. In addition, he desires to show how God has been doing His work through the world.        ...
