Bk and Han First Report from South Korea

Posted by on in The Upward Call

rom I am going to take a break from my normal type of blog to share an email with you that came from the young couple who spent the last 18 months with us at North MacArthur church of Christ working as interns.  Their names are BK and Han.  They came to us from a completely Korean speaking church because they wanted to worship as the Bible instructed, but they were very nervous about their English speaking abilities.  Over several years with us they became very beloved, and we were able to give them an opportunity to learn about ministry through...

Answering the Call

Posted by on in The Upward Call

I have been doing more and more research lately over what is happening with Christian involvement in our culture over the past decade, and it is startling.  There are some books like David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyon's Good Faith are beginning to help us see how much Christians are being considered irrelevant and extreme.    We are seen as irrelevant because we have removed ourselves from the mainstream, therefore, our Christian ideas are getting very little publicity in our culture.  People are believing that Christians are not necessary or even beneficial to our society anymore.  What have they contributed that has been positive...

Obedience Learned Through Suffering

Posted by on in The Upward Call
obedience 4
When I begin to think about the things about Jesus that I appreciate the most, one of the first things I think about is that he understands my struggles and showed me how to finish the race without giving in to them.  Many times as I talk to people, they begin to talk about how much they have sacrificed for God, but when you begin to question them about the will of God as recorded in the Bible, they begin to show ignorance of God's commands.  For example, people will repeat arguments they have heard about instrumental music from others who...

Needs

The next time you are in Walmart, listen to some conversations between parents and their children. Here is part of what you may hear, “But dad I need this!” When you focus on what the child is holding, it may be the latest toy based on a movie or a video game. We understand that this is a characteristic in children that we call immature or childish, yet it is not just a trait that appears in young people.   If you saw the news around Christmas this year, you saw an incident where the police had to be called...

Making a Change in the New Year that Lasts

Posted by on in The Upward Call
God-center-plan1
All of us want to change something about ourselves.  Some of us want to do better in a role of responsibility we have--perhaps to be a better father or mother, or spouse.  Some of us want physical things to change--perhaps to lose wait, change how we eat, or to exercise more to be in better shape.  A lot of these changes that are made as New Year's resolutions are short-lived; in fact, research shows that most resolutions die by the end of January or early February.  The year gets back to its old pace quickly and the motivation to change dies a fairly rapid death. ...

It is Never Too Late

Leroy Gillespie baptism 2
This last week held a lot of personal emotion for me as we were able to baptize a man that I have known for over 12 years.  His name is Leroy Gillespie.  Although I usually don't try to share too much that is locally going on in this blog, I think the story of Leroy is well worth the attention.    I met Leroy about 12 years ago while I was working at Sam's and so was he.  I worked in the electronics department and he was in groceries.  We developed a friendship.  He and his wife Bobbie had come to...

Who Should We See?

Posted by on in The Upward Call

The Great Commission in Matthew 28-19-20 seems like such a large calling. Jesus’ command to “go and make disciples” is not placing the fate of the whole world on your shoulders. Instead, it is asking you to do your part in the world where you are.   Chances are, you are the only person from the Lord’s church who has access to some of the people you do. Make it known that you are a New Testament Christian who believes in only the words of the Bible. This is a great way to become a shining light in the world where...

How to Begin

Posted by on in The Upward Call

I have often had people ask me the question of how to begin a conversation about Jesus with other people. It is a good question, but I think there is a better question. Who do I begin with? In our society, we have so many people around us always. We stand in line with people at Walmart; we drive in traffic; we may attend a sporting event with anywhere between a few thousand to 100,000 people. What does God expect of me when He tells me to share the gospel with the world?   Let me give you a few ideas...

Authority?

Authority 3
We are so used to getting information from all types of sources today. Even though we often go to the internet today to try to find out information about medical conditions, car reviews, or reviews of products we want to buy, we must remember that all this information comes from someone posting it. Therefore, we know the old joke about not trusting everything that we find on the internet, but we continue to go to this information for many things that are important to us.   One of the things that we sometimes trust that is questionable on the internet is...

Being Kind with a Purpose

Posted by on in The Upward Call
Making a comparison
It is always the right thing to do to be kind to other people. However, the kindness of Christians is often wasted because it is not connected to the reason behind the kindness—Jesus Christ. What do I mean by this?   Often Christians are trying to be shining lights in the world, but we forget to tell people where our power supply comes from. Whether it is because of timidity, fear, or other reasons that cause us to be quiet in the face of an opportunity, being kind in and of itself is often a lost opportunity.   For example, we...
