Bible 7Jesus said in John 8:31-32, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”

Many people are being led astray from the truth because they are trusting the words of men without verifying what is being said with the Bible. It is an easy practice to fall into. We are so use to taking the words of others as truth without having to verify or check sources since the invention of the internet and access to massive amounts of data. The truth is, with so much access to information, we know very little because we can look it up if we don’t know it.

On the other hand, what are the odds that we are getting into a jam or having to make a moral decision and we stop to look up what God has to say about it. If we look up an answer on the internet, we will probably get a great variety of responses. This is why we must be able to go to the Bible to find the truth! True disciples of Jesus are always interested in finding the truth and it is always contained in the word of God (the Bible).

The word that Jesus uses abiding literally means “to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy) or to dwell or live” in a location. We cannot drift and expect to be in a constant state with Jesus. We are used to freedom as we talk about it as a nation—freedom of expression, freedom of religion, freedom of speech. None of these are what Jesus is concerned about or addressing in this statement from John. He is talking about one thing—sin. Sin has enslaved us, but Christ has freed us with the Good News of the Gospel.

The next time you hear someone proclaiming something that God or Jesus has “said,” check it with the Bible. We have access to many programs and resources that can help us search the word of God for answers. We must be careful listeners to make sure that man’s ideology has not tried to distort the truth of God’s Word. It is no one else’s responsibility; it rests solely on our shoulders to make sure we are abiding in the word of God so we can have freedom from sin and live with God in heaven for eternity.
